Alexa lets you use all kinds of apps on it to get more features or utilities that you need. An example of this are apps you can use to play music on the devices.

These let you listen to your favorite songs through Alexa in the background while you do something else or just relax. It’s a handy little feature that most people love.

But, do you need an Amazon Prime account to play music on YouTube through Alexa? Lots of people use YouTube as their main source of music, which is why we wanted to answer that question for them.

Does Alexa Need An Amazon Prime Account To Play Music On YouTube?

The answer to this question is simply “no”. Alexa doesn’t need any kind of special account in order to music on YouTube. But, the reason for that isn’t what you think it might be.

Alexa doesn’t need any kind of subscription to play music on YouTube or any videos on the platform because it doesn’t have an option to connect to YouTube.

YouTube is a services that belongs to Google. Google is a direct competitor of Amazon when it comes to smart home devices like Alexa systems, which is why it’s obvious they’d keep YouTube exclusive.

This exclusivity means that Alexa devices have no direct way of pairing with YouTube to play music on YouTube. That’s why you don’t need an Amazon Prime Account to listen to music; because the option doesn’t exist.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t listen to music at all. There’s still the option of using Amazon Music which should have most of the songs you like as long as your Alexa does not response with error message like “this number is already in use”.

Users can also link their Alexa devices to Spotify, which is one of the leading music platforms in the world. If you have a Spotify subscription, that’s a much better option for Alexa devices than most others.

My video below show how you could play Spotify and YouTube music on Alexa devices:

How Can I Listen To Music On YouTube With Alexa?

If you’re 100% bent on listening to music with YouTube on your Alexa, then there is one workaround you can try.

Before you try this, I would suggest you to skip a YouTube track on Alexa as shown in my video below.

Sometimes a specific track have a streaming bug and cause the problem.

This workaround can only be used through a smartphone that has Bluetooth. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Open the settings app on your phone and locate the Bluetooth menu.
  • Once inside the Bluetooth menu, look for new devices you can pair to.
  • Now, with your Alexa on, say “Alexa, pair device”. This will enable its Bluetooth.
  • On these new devices, there should be an option for your Alexa system now.
  • Click on it and the connection will be complete. Any audio you play on your phone should play through Alexa’s speakers.

With the connection made, you can go ahead and play any music on YouTube. This method doesn’t require any kind of Amazon Prime account or subscription, and can be done easily.

But, it’s very limited compared to using Amazon Music and Spotify. That’s because most of the control is still with your smartphone and most of Alexa’s music related commands can’t be used with it.
