Alexa has so many little features, tricks, and quirks that I bet you don’t even know half of them. A lot of them are pretty cool too and can come in handy. But, not all these little quirks are good ones.
There are some that can be bothersome, or straight up annoying. One in particular that ticks users off is a little sound Alexa plays after hearing or completing a command.

That’s pretty annoying at night especially, when you’re trying to be quiet or just don’t want extra noise. So, if you’re wondering “why does Alexa make a sound after a command” or just want to turn it off, here’s how.
Why Does Alexa Make A Sound After A Command?
Alexa makes a sound after you give it a command because it wants you to know that it heard what you said, or already did what you asked it to do.
It’s basically a confirmation message from the machine, letting you know that it’s doing its job. This is something that Alexa usually does with a voice message.
Sometimes you might even hear a sound like it is under a water.
For example, when you tell it to play a song, it’ll usually tell you that it’s about to play the song you told it to play. But, sometimes there might just be a beep or a different sound effect in its place.
This can be loud, and quite frankly just not very nice. So, why is it there instead of Alexa’s voice?
You know the beep’s purpose, but the reason behind it being there can be a couple of different things. One reason for this is request sounds.
Request sounds are a feature you can enable through the Amazon Alexa app that play in addition to other ques Alexa gives when you use the call word. These let you know that it heard you.
There are different kinds of request sounds, with one being the end of request sound that plays when Alexa is done with a task. Regardless of which type of request sound is playing, it’s a likely reason for this happening.
The other possible cause is brief mode. Similar to request sounds, this can be enabled through the Alexa app.
The function of this mode is to make Alexa talk less, and respond with sounds instead. These sounds are indicators of something in particular happening, which is why Alexa plays them after a command.
How To Make Alexa Stop Playing A Sound After A Command
Request Sounds:
My video below will show you how to enable and disable the request sound of the Alexa device.
Here’s what to do if Request Sounds are the reason for this happening:
- Go to the Alexa App and tap More on the bottom right.
- Go to settings, and click on Device Settings.
- Choose the device making the sound.
- Scroll down until you see Sounds. Tap on it.
- Now just go to Request Sounds from this menu and disable it.
Brief Mode:
Here are the steps for when Brief Mode is causing the sound:
- Go to the Alexa App and tap More on the bottom right.
- Now go to settings and click on Voice Responses.
- There should be an option for Brief Mode. Click it.
- Disable the setting, and the noise should stop.
I went to all the settings and none of them were enabled yet she still plays an annoying sound which varies every time either before or after a command. She also says ok which is all I want her to do like she was doing for years prior to about a month ago!!!
