There’s no need for you to wrestle with power cables and unplug your smart display to resolve a hiccup. Instead, all you have to do is hit a few buttons in sequence (provided you’re aware of where they are), that is.
First thing to do is the mute button: You push that down and then you have to hold it down. And you holds it down until the screen does something. Then it pulls up a confirmation dialog that basicly asks, “Are you sure? Do you really want to shut this thing off?”
That’s so no one accidentally turns their smart display off… Or at least less likely to… As they’re using the device and trying to get other things done. Makes sense that you has some sort of safeguard for that.
Restarting Without Unplugging
Then you hit OK, and boom! The screen update instantly. Then another message appear telling you that it’s powering down.
You sit there waiting a bit while it finishes up its work. No loading icon or progress bar. Just a blank screen with a line of text informing you what’s going on. It seems slick and the smart display shut down uneventfully without missing a beat.
You shut off the screen completely, so that all of the indicators and lights turns off and the whole device is dark. Then you wait, because occasionally just turning it back on doesn’t get rid of little software glitches. It needs time to fully power down, which is what happens if you give it a moment or two.
Press the button again to wake it. Then, hold down the mute button again. Wait this time for the logo to come back up. It doesn’t take long. A couple seconds later, the Echo logo comes back on the screen.
That’s your sign: the startup process is underway. Just leave it be, no further action required; the system will handle the rest.
The device springs back to life immediately and goes back to the home screen. Everything is restored: your clocks, date, notifications and alarms. Weather pops up in the corner. It’s just like it was prior to restarting.
And that makes this a nice way to save yourself from rummaging around for your power adapter… While keeping your desk clean and free of cables.
Mute button, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to restart my phone with out plugging in first. It’s so easy; you don’t have to unplug anything. And if your screen is acting funny or frozen, just hit that mute button.
It’s a fast solution to small problems. Hit it. Confirm it. Wait a few seconds. Then hit it again. That’s it. Seamless. No extra steps. No need to pull that plug out cause it’s such a pain in the butt. You should of just used this method earlier. Nope. That’s better. Simple, works.
