Resetting a Philips Hue Bulb in Under a Minute

In a perfect world, where all the components are propery linked, Philips’ Hue is a good system. And for a while, it was. The bulb hooked up to their bridge just fine and the dimmer switch operated them as it should. Power on/off and adjust the intensity of the bulb from across the room? No problem there.

That is, until one lamp wouldn’t respond anymore. The rest was working just fine. One wasn’t, it got stuck on whatever setting it had been left on. The app toggle wouldn’t help; that bulb didn’t want to comply. Time for a reset.

Performing the Physical Reset

Philips Hue bridge and bulbs setup

First things first: Check your setup before doing something drastic. Physically connect the lamp to the Hue Bridge. First make sure that your bridge status lights is illuminated and indicate that the two are connected. The three power, Wi-Fi and signal strength lights will all be solidely lit.

Hue bulb powered on and lit

Make sure that the hub itself have power. Since the bulb is wired into the hub, double check if it’s on. Finally, the bulb needs to have its light lit in order for the reset to happen. The bulb won’t do anything if it’s off. So make sure the bulb is lit up brightly and steady… This is critical.

The bulb connects to the hub, so you need to confirm it is powered on.

Take the dimmer switch. It’s a plain old white remote with three button visible on it (for brightness down), brightness up and power. With the bulb sitting next to you, hold the switch in your hand.

You must physically interact with the switch by pressing a certain combination of buttons (not found in the app settings). Put your fingers over the buttons. Get ready to push them down.

Holding dimmer buttons to reset bulb

The timing matter here.

On the back is the power and off buttons (the top two). Instead of just tapping these buttons, press them firmly. Don’t let up. You’ll notice that the bulb start blinking. Keep holding it until you get a visual cue. You can release once it’s done.

The blinking means it’s resetting. It should of do this really quickly. If so, it’s ready. The bulb has been reset and is now on its original settings. All is clear in the connection world.

To be sure this actualy does work every time, try it with another bulb. Choose a bulb that’s connected to the bridge through the same hub. Then repeat those same instructions. Press down on both buttons simultaneously. Hold them down until they blink.

Connecting Hue bulbs to bridge hub

Test the process on another bulb by repeating the exact same steps. If it did, then good job, you know the process realy does work. You’re not just getting lucky once… It’s safe to use the process now.

It’s realy quick (under one minute). No need for an app opening. No need for firmware updates or rebooting your router. It is a physical reset. It works. It fixes your connectivity problem quick.

Bulbs turn on again. And then you re-pair the bulbs. The old link is gone, so you can create a new one. It’s faster than complicated troubleshooting.

While this happens, however, the bridge doesn’t go dark. The status lights don’t blink differently. You can still see your Wi-Fi and signal strength. Only the bulbs are being interacted with here.

And it’s not even the hub that needs to be looked at. Instead, it’s a matter of letting the dimmer switch do its thing, it acts like a trigger for a reset, but at the hardware level different than through software. That means a clean slate instead of having to reset your bridge to factory settings. And it means targeting the issue by isolating the bad bulb.

So that’s that, you’re done. Now you have to re-pair the lights. That will be its own article though.

Anyway, the reset takes less than a minute. There’s no tech talk here. Two pushbutton, a couple of blinks and you’re done. It is simple and effective.

The whole experience is straightforward.

This entire process is simple. You do not have to dig through help articles and settings. Simply click a few buttons and your bulbs does what you want them to do.

That’s great if you have a bulb that’s stuck. This resets its connection and clears the cache, allowing it to be ready for new commands. This is an easy, useful trick that you will always remember.
