It is annoying that the Dyson air purifier has quit rotating. First you thought it was just a setting problem; that’s what it typicaly is. So you pick up the remote control and look at the status.
If it’s set to rotate (it can be set to stationary as well) then pressing the Rotate button will make it do so. That test proves whether it’s rotating or not.
You tapped it but nothing came of that. On to next thing: physical inspection.
Inspecting the Internal Mechanism
The first thing I did was turn the unit off. Next, remove the entire bottom cover. After that you have to turn the unit back on so that you can see the internal workings of the mechanism.
Okay, messing around in there made me nervous but in order to diagnose properly I had to. So I pressed the Rotate button and watched carefuly. That’s when I saw it. The internal gear train came undone.
Initially, I didn’t see how that could be a problem since everything else about the device appeared to work just fine.
This time out, however, you watched them closely. And they weren’t quite right at all. They obviously was not meshing properly, and several had even come apart from the others completely. That doesn’t allow for proper oscillation.
The whole thing is based off those parts being lined up and it happens a lot more than you’d imagine. When the gears is loose, they won’t rotate.
It was a bummer to discover that, but at least I knew why remote command wasn’t working.
Turns out, the fix was simple. Gently loosen the gear assembly. Give it a minute and reposition them to make sure they are in the correct position to mesh with each other.
Then tighten it all down again and there you go; the connection is locked up. And the unit began oscillating immediately. It worked great.
You brought your air purifier back to life without having to take it to a pro for repair. A simple mechanical realignment fixed the problem.
This was a learning experience. First off, always verify that settings weren’t just changed because the remote control got bumped accidentally. It happens all the time.
But hardware fails sometimes, too. How do you know? A quick look at the interior gears will help you actualy find the issue. This is when it pays to have some tools close by. No need for expensive service calls. Worth a shot.
Now, it rotate smoothly. The air moves through the room evenly. Because of better circulation, your air quality is much improved. You’re happy with the results.
If you do same steps and take care, you can do that too. Use caution when handling plastic pieces, forcing it causes them to break easily. A patient person gets the rewards at the finish line.
The point is to look for source. Don’t jump in and rip it apart. First, check if a quick button push from afar will work. It takes seconds. Rule out software or settings issues fast.
And if no…you get under the hood. Time wears on things mechanicaly. Gears can comes loose. Realigning them will make them work fully again.
It’s an effective solution to this problem. I know many people who has had the same problem. A few may suggest replacing it through Dyson customer service, but this is a DIY solution.
Instead of wasting time waiting on service just do it yourself. Overall, it takes under 10 minutes and anyone could of figured out how to do it.
