When that Gree AC remote dissapears, you run into a wall. The unit has frozen at some earlier setting and manual overrides is useless. A hard reset is required.
First you check the manual. That’s gone. Next you search the web looking for a combination of buttons to make it happen. Everything you read assume you have a remote. Nothing useful there.
This helps nothing.
Resetting the Unit
That doesn’t help.
A power cycle? Maybe that will do it. Sometimes electronics require a fresh start. So there’s the main power switch located on the back of the panel.
Carefully, you remove the screw securing the cover. You don’t pay any attention to the warning label on the inside; just turn off the power. That’s right; pull the plug and disconnect it.
This will clear the capacitor and force a complete reboot of the internal board. You’re waiting a couple of minutes. This drain takes time. Patience is a virtue, but in this case, it is worth the wait.
Then reconnecting. Plug it back in. The fan starts humming. The lights come on. The screen lights up. The error is not cleared yet, though. Just turned on, but the mode is still stuck. You have to switch it.
And then you discover the trick. There’s an actual button on the indoor panel for Auto. Nobody ever mentions this one. Everyone talks about IR codes, but nobody ever says anything about that button.
Now you see it, now you don’t.
Press it once.
And suddenly the screen refreshes. And there is that number: 25. There’s a little indicator light that flickers on. That means it went into Automatic mode.
Now the system controls itself, deciding what it needs to be, heat, cool, fan, depending on the room temp. Mission accomplished. The old glitch is erased. The AC springs to life again. Settings revert to defaults. No new remote required. No technician required either. One button and done.
Silly, right? You searched for hours. You viewed so many tutorial videos. There was not a single reference to this obvious solution. So yeah, you’re feeling kind of dumb now. But at least you’re relieved. It took less than ten minutes total.
That’s what the Auto button does: override whatever manual setting was locked in place, and reset the logic board to its starting point. Don’t run out for a replacement remote quite yet; you’ll only know if that’s necessary after you’ve done this. And it costs less. It also takes less time. That’s why you try this first.
Once you do, the sound goes off and the room cools back down. The air begins flowing normaly again, and you get a good night’s sleep. The AC works like a champ from then on. You won’t sweat anymore. Nothing about the glitch gets remembered; it’s a clean slate.
All of their panels are laid out similarly so this should work on most Gree models. Search around the power button for a button labeled Auto. It is normaly close to the power button. If not, remove the panel cover and search underneath. It’s back there.
You cannot skip that part. Power has to be disconnected. It needs a true reboot of the unit. A soft restart will not work.
So hard power off works best, you wait for the board to discharge, and then you connect back up. Because it allows for a clean start, you let the board discharge.
The manual says to keep it with you, but when you lose it this does the trick. You lost your remote? This will work. Is it stuck in one mode or frozen? This will fix it. Give it a shot…you’ll notice the change. After resetting the AC, it operates more smoothly. It’s also more efficient.
So all you need is your hands and a little patience. That’s it. No tools required. Don’t make it complicated. It’s an easy fix. Everyone makes it more difficult then it needs to be. They call in the pros for small things. Good on you for avoiding that expense.
Yes that’s normal. 25 degrees is the default setting on display. It will adjust automatically to your preference, and you can change it later if you want. If you don’t like the remote and want to buy a different one, you can do that and change the settings to match. But for what it’s worth, it works, function trumps form.
“Now you’re ready for next time. You know this trick that will help reduce the stress in your life. You can go forward feeling a bit better now. Remotes get lost. Batteries die. Panels lock up and it’s not uncommon. This gets documented for yourself and anyone else who may be dealing with the same problem.
And then there’s when you’re at your wit’s end. This happens a lot. So what do you do? Press the Auto button and cut the power.
The screen changes and you see those 25 degrees. Hooray! It worked. And it felt good, too, as that cool air poured over you. Twice, just to be certain, you did it again. And yes, it worked.
Done. The AC works. You don’t need a remote anymore. Problem solved. A little luck (and some basic troubleshooting) did it for you. The luck came when you found the button. We nearly didn’t see it. It was hidden in plain sight. Is it a classic design flaw or a feature? Depends if you think about it that way.
It was frustrating initially, but satisfying ultimately. It worked like a champ. Everything turned out fine in the end.
You’re satisfied with the final product and the money you saved. And money matters, but not as much as time. It paid off in both ways and was worth your time.
In conclusion: Just make it easy on yourself. Turn off the power, then push Auto. Sit down and wait. That’s all there is to it. Don’t get too fancy with things. Use what they have built in. Why did they put those options there? Because it works…use their intelligence wisely. Save yourself some grief and maybe you’ll remember next time.
It is short and sweet. There is no fluff whatsoever. It was nothing but stuff you learned through your own trial and error. Mainly error then success, hence the happy ending.
Life continues as normal again, your AC is working properly and everything is back to how it should be: comfortable for you and cool for them.
