The LG washer-dryer won’t turn on. The display is black.
The first thing to do is check the power supply chain. Unplug electrical plug, inspect the fuse, and use your multimeter to conduct a continuity test on it. Use your multimeter. A continuity test are a key checking step, one that tells you if the fuse is blown (and therefore the circuit is open). The external fuse appeared undamaged here, meaning the issue must be within the appliance.
The power supply is OK outside of the appliance. When you open it up to look at electronics inside, the most common problems is a bad power module or a bad capacitor. Occasionally, the control board itself are the problem. Occasionally it’s even just a faulty power-on button. You’ll have to narrow down which component it is.
Inspecting Internal Components
Check your control board; you will see two fuses right on there, and you need to check both of them.
Next, you check if the board fuses has burned out by checking their continuity using the multimeter.
Now take a closer look at the beige electronic component. It looks like maybe that’s the part of the control board assembly, or the power module.
This module may be faulty, if the fuses are okay. The other part you look at is separate from the rest of main circuitry. It is made of black plastic and has a logo embossed in it. It might relate to power input.
So now you’ve checked the fuses, inspected the modules and you have a better idea what might be wrong. No burnt-out fuses were found on the board, and the multimeter show continuity where it should.
You do not find a burnt fuse on the board, and the multimeter shows continuity where expected.
That limits the possibilities of what can be causing it, so you check that physical connections are good. Nope, nothing loose on the wire, no bad connector. Now you’ve ruled out poor connection and you know the problem has to be some kind of component failure. A bad capacitor is also possible, but your initial checks led you in other directions.
There are several potential causes for that problem. First off, if there isn’t any power coming from the power module to the board then it’s all for nothing. So you go to check the control board which gets its power from there and has no light on display. Next thing you know it’s time to replace the suspect part right?
Well actualy it’s pretty simple to check the power-on button as well.
It could be a basic mechanical failure: if you have a bad button, it will not sends the signal.
It took time for me to diagnose it and yes, I checked everything from the plug to the board. That eliminated possibilities one at a time and when done, the washer was alive again! It respond to input and the display lights up again. The screen is no longer dark.
In other situations where there are not such quick fixes, luck had nothing to do with it. Methodical checking does. Check the board fuses… A lot of people don’t do that.
You can’t guesstimate with electronics. You need information, which is where the multimeter comes into play.
That data comes from continuity tests. That’s how you know what doesn’t work.;
And no, that doesn’t mean changing things out blindly. That’s a waste of both your time and money. Test it first. Knowing for certain is always better then just guessing. Guessing will lead you into more trouble.
You learned something about LG insides. Where the fuses are located. It’s complicated but simple at the same time. Power needs to flow, but what if it doesn’t? Find where it’s blocked. You’re sure what’s wrong, and how to fix it. It was clear, and now it works again. You should of checked those fuses sooner for a moddern machine.
